Cheapest Countries to Retire Abroad (2026)

Country-level retirement cost ranking. We show median city cost of living (not the cheapest single city), so you're comparing apples to apples across countries with multiple expat destinations.

Filtered to countries where we track meaningful expat city data (typically 2+ cities). For each, we include the country's tax system — important because cost of living + tax treatment together determine your real purchasing power.

Frequently asked questions

What's the single cheapest country to retire in?

Among countries with real expat infrastructure, Vietnam and Thailand lead on pure cost — median city cost of living is around $1,100-1,300/month for a comfortable solo lifestyle. Bangladesh, Pakistan, and several African countries are cheaper in absolute terms but have thinner expat infrastructure, visa complexity, and/or safety concerns. The best cost-per-lifestyle ratio is usually Vietnam, Thailand, Colombia, or Mexico.

Is cheap = good quality of life?

Not automatically. Some very cheap countries have unreliable infrastructure (frequent power outages, slow internet), limited healthcare, complex visa rules, or safety concerns. The list below is filtered to countries with substantive expat communities, which is a proxy for livability. Always research the specific city — e.g. Cuenca, Ecuador is much cheaper than Guayaquil but has a large retiree community.

Can US citizens retire in these cheap countries?

Yes, but US citizenship carries two complications abroad: (1) US worldwide taxation — you'll still file US taxes regardless of residency; (2) FATCA/FBAR banking disclosures — many foreign banks won't open accounts for US citizens due to compliance cost. Workarounds include opening accounts at large international banks (HSBC, Citi) or using US-based neobanks that work abroad (Charles Schwab, Wise).

What about the tax implications?

Territorial-tax countries (Thailand, Panama, Malaysia, Costa Rica, Georgia) don't tax foreign investment income — the cleanest tax situation for FIRE retirees. Others have treaty-based reductions or specific retiree regimes (Portugal NHR ended but IFICI is successor; Greece non-dom; Italy flat tax). See our best-countries-with-territorial-tax guide for the detailed breakdown.
