Frequently asked questions

What's a retirement visa?

A retirement visa (sometimes called a passive-income, pensioner, or 'retiree residency' visa) is a long-term residency status granted to foreigners who can prove stable income from pensions, Social Security, or investments — without needing to work locally. Portugal D7, Thailand LTR (Long-Term Resident), Spain Non-Lucrative, Mexico Temporary Resident, and Panama Pensionado are the most well-known programs.

How much income do I need to qualify?

Varies by country. Portugal D7: ~€9,840/year in passive income (~$10,700). Spain NLV: ~€28,800/year (~$31K). Thailand LTR: $80K/year or $1M in assets. Mexico Temporary Resident: ~$3,500/month. Panama Pensionado: $1,000/month pension. Most EU programs require showing income meeting or exceeding the local minimum wage; Latin American and SE Asian programs are typically lower.

Do these visas give tax residency?

Usually yes — holding a retirement visa and spending 183+ days per year typically makes you a tax resident of that country. Importantly, Portugal's NHR program previously gave 10 years of favorable tax treatment to new tax residents (closed to new entrants in 2024; replaced by the IFICI). Malta, Cyprus, Italy and others have comparable regimes. Thailand's DTV and LTR programs have distinct tax rules.

What about digital-nomad visas?

DN visas are typically 1-2 year renewable statuses for remote workers, not a path to permanent residency. Portugal's D8 Digital Nomad Visa, Spain's DNV, and Greece's DN visa all fall in this bucket. For retirees specifically, the traditional retirement/passive-income visas (D7, Pensionado, NLV) are usually the better fit — they lead to permanent residency and sometimes citizenship.
